Views on this Year’s Holiday Shopping

Overall, Americans are split on how they are going into this Holiday season when it comes to their economic security. About half are feeling less secure than last year, while half are feeling better or about the same with Men and younger Americans leading the list of the most optimistic. Looking forward Americans are more positive than negative when it comes to their expectations for the 2024 economy.

Together these numbers point to a bit of a mixed bag for this holiday season. Just under 3 in 10 Americans say they are going to be spending more this holiday season, compared to last, while the number who say they are going to spend less is closer to 2 in 5. For retailers who are wondering, the view looking backwards has a bigger correlation with spending plans this year, but neither past or future views are strongly correlated.
