Consumers, customers, clientele there are many names for them, but regardless of what you call them, they are the lifeblood of just about every for-profit organization. Understand your consumer, success is much more likely. Live in darkness, your success is based more on luck. This day and age, we have more data on consumers than ever before, however, data does not necessarily mean understanding. Much of this comes from a proliferation of “glory data” (clicks, visits, impressions) that can provide data to prove ROI, but they certainly do not help improve ROI.
Consumer decisions are based on many factors, but most research focuses on one or two points in time during the decision making process. This is not to say that research done post-purchase, or on your website is meaningless, but these are just two points in a 360 degree process.
