This spring, the national news cycle has been dominated by news of tariffs. President Trump announced early into his second term that he planned to levy tariffs on American trading partners, including Canada. There has been significant back and forth from the White House, resulting in economic chaos over the past few months, although it may be some time before we can really assess the true impact of these tariffs. Still, suffice it to say that Americans are starting to form opinions around what’s going on. 

Here are the key takeaways from this week’s chart:

  • 👎Americans Generally Disapprove of Trump’s Tariff Plan: Just 3 out of 10 Americans (30%) support Trump’s tariff plan, answering 60 or higher on the 0-100 scale. While another 22% fall somewhere in the middle, that leaves nearly half of Americans (47%) disapproving at some level (0-39 out of 100).
  • 👫Men Are More Likely to Be Supportive: Although 42% disapprove, more than one-third of men (36%) support Trump’s tariff plan. Meanwhile, more than half of women (51%) disapprove,
  • 👶👴Boomers Are Playing Both Sides: Americans in the Boomer generation (born between1946-1964) disapprove of Trump’s tariff plan the most (56%), followed by Gen Z at 51%. However, they rank second in approval; 33% say they approve of Trump’s tariffs, only behind Millennials at 34%.
